TENDERLOIN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
CHILDREN'S CENTER & COMMUNITY
SERVICES FACILITY
Turk Street @ Van Ness; San Francisco Unified School District
This new inner-city school for San Francisco's Tenderloin District
was designed by architect Joseph Esherick, Esherick Homsey Dodge & Davis,
in association with architects Wayne Barcelon and Darlene Jang,
Barcelon & Jang, for the SFUSD and the Bay Area Women's and
Children's Center. The new $17 million 66,686 s.f. facility is
the first elementary school and community center in this tough
district, from where children were bussed to schools as far as
Treasure Island. The facility will serve 540 elementary school
students and includes a day care facility, medical and dental
facilities, counseling rooms, an adult education center, and
a parking garage. Since space was a large concern on this tight
urban site, the roof areas were also utilized as playspace and
community garden space. The team of EHDD and Barcelon & Jang
worked with the community and school district to make the Tenderloin
Community School a reality. |
